One of my goals for this year was to read more and while I didn’t give myself a particular number of books to reach, I have already exceeded my amount read from last year. I have really enjoyed every book I’ve read and wanted to share the with you guys in case you are needing some recommendations for yourself!

• If You Only Knew by Jamie Ivey: I’ve listened to Jamie’s podcast “The Happy Hour” pretty much since it began almost 5 years ago so I was eager to get to hear more about her story. Jamie boldly shares the hardest parts of her life in hopes that others can realize that everyone has a past and most importantly, point to God’s redemption and grace in her life. It is through our weaknesses that God is most glorified (2 Corinthians 12:9-11) and it was a reminder to me to continue to be transparent with both the good and the bad in my life with others.

• Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson: I have wanted to read this book for years now, but have put it off time after time because I knew it would be a difficult one to tackle. Bryan Stevenson poignantly shares his personal experiences with the systematic injustices in our judicial and prison systems, especially in the southern states. The book centers around one particular case in Alabama involving a black man charged with murdering a white woman, even though the evidence all but proves him innocent. As a white person, it’s important for us to listen and empathize with those around us who are of a different race to better understand their worldview and experiences and this book is a great place to start with that.

• Triggers: Exchanging Parents Angry Reactions with Gentle Biblical Responses by Amber Lia and Wendy Speake THIS BOOK! Almost every chapter left me in tears because I resonated so much with what they were saying. Anyone who is a mother should read it. There is literally applicable information and biblical encouragement for just about any topic that can cause frustration or anger in our lives. Mom-ing is hard and can bring out our worst and this book redirects your heart to the Lord and provides scriptural references as a guide.

• A Man Called Ove by Fredrick Backman. It took me months to finish this book as it was one that I would pick up then put down. However, it was such a funny, endearing read with a quirky storyline and heartwarming ending. It takes place in modern day Sweden (I think) and the main character is a grouchy old man who is disgruntled with the progressive world after a personal tragedy. I loved that it centered around the power of what being a good neighbor can do for a person.

• Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens It seems like everyone and their mama was reading this book this summer and for good reason. I finished it in a week and loved it. It was somewhat of a murder mystery mixed with a love story and the descriptive writing was so beautiful.

• The Road Back to You by Ian Morgan Cron: I’ve loved learning about the enneagram these past few years and finally got around to reading this book after listening to many of Ian and Suzanne’s podcasts.

• Educated by Tara Westover: This book is probably my favorite book I’ve read this year. I finished it in about 3 days and couldn’t believe that I was reading a non-fiction book at times because the stories of Tara’s upbringing were so crazy.

• The Tattooist of Auschwitz: Another page turner that was captivating. It is a novel that is based on a couples actual story, yet its still a fiction book. Equal parts heartbreaking and heartwarming, this is a quick read that would be perfect for a weekend getaway that could be finished in that time.

• Embraced: 100 Devotions to Know God is Holding You Close by Lisa TerKeurst: I was given this devotional at the beginning of the year and it has been so encouraging. It’s perfect for quick Biblical encouragement and Lisa’s relatable writing makes everything she shares so applicable.
